The Augusta University Libraries in partnership with the Augusta Jewish Museum and Georgia Humanities Council will host a series of four lectures and panels focusing on the Holocaust and the Central Savannah River Area’s Jewish Community.
At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the Historical Collections and Archives Room at Greenblatt Library, Dr. Robert Nesbit, Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, will kick the series off by speaking on former MCG Professor Dr. Virgil Sydenstricker and his work in rehabilitating malnourished concentration camp survivors.

The series, funded by a $1,499 grant from the Georgia Humanities Council, aims to provide an understanding of the impact the events of the Second World War had on the Augusta area and its Jewish community.
The series, which is free and open to the public will also have events on Nov. 14, Jan. 12 and March 19.
In November, a panel of AU faculty will discuss how the Holocaust was covered in national and local media at the Reese Room.
January’s event, which will take place in the Linda W. Beazley Room at the Augusta Municipal Building, will be a partnership with the Augusta Jewish Museum. “We are Here: Augusta Jewish Museum Comes to Life,” will focus on the history of Jewish people in Augusta.
The March event will be a panel called “Women’s Experiences of the Holocaust and the Aftermath,” which will also occur in the Reese Room.
This project is supported by Georgia Humanities, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, through funding from the Georgia General Assembly.
