Constitution Day 2014

constitution day flier 2014

The late West Virginia senator Robert Byrd declared that September 17 is “more important to our everyday lives than Columbus Day, more important to our everyday lives than Thanksgiving, more important to our everyday lives than the Fourth of July.” September 17 is Constitution Day, and it honors the date the Constitution was signed by the United States’ founding fathers in 1787. To help raise awareness about the Constitution and its significance, Senator Byrd introduced legislation that requires educational institutions that receive federal funds to educate students about the U.S. Constitution on September 17. The legislation passed in 2004 as a part of Public Law 108-447, and today colleges and universities like GRU celebrate every September 17 as Constitution Day.

From 11 am to 3 pm on September 17, come out to celebrate Constitution Day in the JSAC Breezeway on the Summerville campus. Test your knowledge in the Constitutional Quiz Bowl for the chance to win prize baskets full of goodies from Dining Services, the JagStore, Athletics, and OCM. Answer constitutional questions that affect Americans’ daily lives in the Democracy Plaza or take a photo in the photo booth at your patriotic best. Listen to Student Government Association members read the Constitution and take a free pocket-sized Constitution to keep.

Constitution Day 2014 activities are sponsored by GRU Libraries, the Jaguar Production CREW, and the Student Government Association.

Stall Walls (in student bathrooms across Summerville campus), Need to Know (emails from departments to students), and possibly PawPrints (this is supposed to be a venue for students to promote their events; however, since student organizations are cosponsoring the event, we may be able to use it):
