NLM Traveling Exhibit on Display at Greenblatt Library

The Robert B. Greenblatt, MD Library is hosting the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibit Pictures of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection. This exhibit explores a unique archive held at NLM of 2,588 postcards and over 100 years of images of nurses and the nursing profession from around the world. Postcards are a unique form of art influenced by social and cultural beliefs, and postcards have illustrated the nursing profession in a variety of artistic styles and images – more noticeably than any other art form.

The Zwerdling Postcard Collection reveals how nurses and the nursing profession was seen in different parts of the world and during times of war and times of peace. These postcard images of nurses reflect cultural values; ideologies regarding women, men, and work; as well as attitudes about class, race, and national differences.

This traveling exhibit will be on display at the Greenblatt Library until July 14, 2018, and it is open and free to the public. The National Library of Medicine has an excellent online exhibit to complement what can be seen at the Greenblatt Library. Be sure to view their digital gallery of more than 500 images from the Zwerdling Postcard Collection.
