Julie K. Gaines, Associate Professor and Head of the Medical Partnership Library, AU-UGA Medical Partnership, received the 2018 Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award by the Friends of the National Library of Medicine.
Established in the 1990s in commemoration of renowned cardiovascular surgeon Dr. DeBakey, this annual award honors an outstanding health sciences librarian who serves rural or underserved populations. She is fully integrated in the medical school curriculum by teaching evidence-based medicine topics for classes and clerkships. Gaines also serves as a small-group faculty facilitator in the community health and the population health components of the curriculum.
Gaines received her Master of Library and Information Sciences degree from the University of South Carolina, is a member of the library and information science honor society Beta Phi Mu, and completed graduate work at the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.
