Junior College of Augusta: A Century of Transformation

Did you know that 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Augusta University’s legacy institution, the Junior College of Augusta? Established in 1925, the Junior College of Augusta was established as a part of the Academy of Richmond County. The following year both the academy and the junior college moved into the Academy’s current location on Walton Way.

In 1957, the junior college separated and moved to the Summerville Campus we all know today, though the campus looked a bit different at that time. Shortly after the move, in 1958, the college officially changed to Augusta College, which it would remain until 1996,  when it became Augusta State University.

To celebrate this important milestone from our institution’s history, there is currently a display on the third floor of Reese Library outside the Special Collections Reading Room. The display features memorabilia, pictures, and other items reflecting the years of growth that arose from the Junior College of Augusta 100 years ago.
