Book Discussion on the “Problem of Disabled Veterans”

On December 6th, Reese Library held a book discussion of the book Paying with Their Bodies: American War and the Problem of Disabled Veteran by John M. Kinder. This event was held in concordance with the National Library of Medicine traveling exhibit now on display Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War. While the exhibit focuses on disabled veterans and their experiences during and after the American Civil War, Kinder’s book takes a broader look at the treatment of disabled war veterans throughout history in the United States.

During the book discussion, participants discussed similarities in how war veterans were treated from the Civil War and World War I leading up to today (as well as differences); the views of society on disability in general; how veterans are honored and remembered, as well as not; as well as several other topics. For those who may have missed the discussion, but would like to learn more on the topic, Paying with Their Bodies is available for check out from Reese Library. The exhibit, Life and Limb, will also be on display on the second floor of Reese Library through December 22nd.
